Twenty minutes later Nell stood in the kitchen, showered, hair blow-dried, sipping hot tea after she’d been hugged. She was saying, ‘The water just kept rising. It happened so fast. Within an hour of looking out the window, it had come up the steps of the house and just flooded through. Must be heavy falls up the valley for that volume of water to come down the creek. A flash flood. If the rain doesn’t stop, half of our town will go.’

Our town? Did she feel that way? Yes, Hannah realised. This was her town, too. But she had never expected to hear those words. Although everyone talked about the chance of flooding, it was different to hear of the water just washing through Nell’s lovely house.

‘Have you heard from Gracie or Molly?’ She knew what Jude had said, but she needed more. Hannah hadn’t liked to call and be a nuisance just to satisfy her own concerns.

‘No. Liam tried to ring Molly back, but it dropped out.’

‘Let’s hope Oliver stays asleep, then, he’s my godson but at least he knows you.’

Nell waved that away. ‘He’ll be fine. Just feed him. He’s like his dad, loves his food. Though I thought they’d have returned by now.’

So had Hannah. She fought back a sudden swamp of cold dread for Gracie. And for Molly. And for Jude. Where were they?
